6 March 2013

I woke up at 2:30 am and fell back to sleep until 3:00 am when my alarm rang. I woke Jonathan up at 3:30 and we left home at 3:42. We missed our flight last July, so we left extra early today so as to not repeat that fiasco. I have been looking forward to this trip for months. These expeditions with my ten-year old son help me to sort the wheat from the chaff. Jonathan, like all kids, has a remarkable power to focus on the present and ignore the past and future. When I am with him 24 hours each day on St. Croix that philosophy takes precedent. I can't alter the past, the future doesn't exist, so with his help I live in the present. Food for the soul.

The sky was overcast and there were a few drops of water on the windshield when we left. Rain or dew - it was hard to determine. There was very little traffic, so we checked in at American Airlines at 4:45. The TSA employee we spoke with did not know how exactly the sequester will impact her job. But she was upset about the possibility of furloughs. She did not think it was fair that working people like her should be punished because the politicians can't figure out how to govern. Our flight from Hartford to Miami was uneventful but we experienced a 30 minute delay leaving Miami.

We gathered Brenda Lopez and Diane DuBois from a later JetBlue flight and arrived at Cottages By The Sea in time to unpack and immerse in the soothing Caribbean. The waves were larger than the summer but the water was as warm and nurturing as ever. The cloud bank allowed us to see the sun sink into the Caribbean and, with a little imagination, witness the green flash. Our traditional arrival night pizza at the Lost Dog was as good as ever and Brenda, Dianne and Jonathan enjoyed chalking their names to the walls. The clouds obscured many of the stars although we could see Jupiter in the western sky. We were all sawing logs before 10 pm.
