Obtaining ImageJ

Download ImageJ from NIH

Using ImageJ

1. Launch ImageJ
2. Select the Line tool from the toolbar
3. Select Set Measurements from the Analyze menu
   
   1. Deselect all boxes except Display Label
   2. Change Decimal Places to 2
   3. Select OK
4. Draw a line along the ruler for some known interval (e.g., 1 cm)
5. Select Set Scale from the Analyze menu
6. Enter cm in the Unit of Length: box
7. Select Global
8. Select OK
9. Draw a line across the character to be measured (hold the mouse button down from the start to the end of the measurement distance)
10. Type command-M - a Results splash screen should appear with the sample number, Label (image name), Angle, and Length
11. Save Data
    
    1. Select the Results screen
    2. Select Save As from the File menu
       
       1. Give the file a distinguishing name
       2. Save it to the desktop or Documents folder
