Today has been quite the eventful day as well as yesterday! Today is Monday March 16, 2009.
I awoke this morning at 7:15 to Jonathon’s excited voice yelling, “Matt there’s a big cruise ship outside!!!” I got right up and went out with him and took a picture. I then went inside and made some more breakfast. I had fried eggs, with fried ham and cheese on toast. It was so good. Then at 9 am, Buzz, Katie and I went to the refuge to move in. Katie and I had to clean it up a little bit to call it home but it is a nice place to stay. I will have to take some pictures of it so everyone can see. After that we went to the grocery store and bought some much-needed groceries. I bought some coconut milk and pineapple juice so I can make some genuine pina coladas tonight. I bought some dark Cruzan estate rum for the pina coladas and it was cheaper then the coconut milk! You know you’re in paradise when the rum is cheaper then the things your mixing it with!
After the grocery store we hung around for a minute, ate some lunch, and headed out to the refuge to get the mongoose traps. We caught 7 mongooses today!!! We all made a bet at how many we were going to catch before we left. Jonathon only thought we would catch 3, Katie thought we would catch 5, I thought that we would catch 9, and Phil thought we were going to catch 10. Katie won the bet because she was the closest without going over. Regardless it was another successful day.
We brought the mongoose back and did the same procedures as before. I named only a select few of the mongoose today as a joke because they all have such different personalities. The first mongoose that I caught today I named Adelaide. The reason is because she was such a sweetheart. Not once did she snarl, screech or attempt to bite me even when I first approached her all the way until we took her out of her cage. Anyway, we had a lot of fun once again trapping and releasing these guys.
While setting them free today, I had one of the larger mongoose attempted to bite me and he got awfully close! While I was trying to set him free, he decided to take a shot at my hand on his way out, but he was unsuccessful and I pulled my hand right in time! After we released all of the mongooses, Buzz prepared some sirloin steaks that he got for $5.99 a pound, along with a fruit salad. Katie made some homemade potato home fries and I made fried plantains. It was quite the feast with homemade ice cream for dessert! (I have eaten so much here it is unbelievable! And my pina coladas came out great! I will have to share the recipe with everyone!)
Now I am sitting at a table, listening to the ocean in the background and looking into the ocean view night. Tonight Katie and I will be sleeping in the refuge. Tomorrow will be a fun packed morning of snorkeling, swimming, and some kayaking, then mongoose trapping in the afternoon. It should be a great day!
