Field Season 2008

Juvenile mongoose at Sandy PointThe mongoose research group returned on August 14 after catching 27 unique individuals at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge. The new data will be available soon for download.

One goal of our field season was to explore potential designs for collars and harnesses that could support the proposed electronic tracking devices. The most successful design was a sleeve of stretchy fabric with leg holes and a drawstring around the neck made of cotton. We believe these offer substantial potential to stay on for several weeks and then, when the cotton decays in the tropical environment, to be easily shed from the animal.

We will return to St. Croix during March 2009.
